One Thousand Sunset-Stories

Kevin Mak

Hong Kong (2020)

One sunset scene on a single street in Hong Kong could mean a thousand sunset-stories behind the dense vernacular textures. The artist has a strong interest in the massive urban vernacular architecture from the 50s-60s in Hong Kong that once represented the ambitions in that generation to accommodate the rapid growth in population and demand on the space for home-factories. These buildings were once the sleekest modern buildings ever with open-plan configurations. The artist believes that the design intention behind that allowed an informal & flexible way of living had a deep grounded influence to the lifestyle and culture of the city. These are in fact very pronounced in how the traces of life from different families are visually expressed on the walls of these buildings.

An award-winning Hong Kong photographer and architect, Kevin Mak captures Hong Kong from unique urban and spatial perspectives. His art embraces the layers of history and blending of cultures that Hong Kong represents, capturing this in a timeless yet modern style. Through his striking images, Kevin aims to showcase the quiet calm that lies under the city’s chaotic, crowded veneer.
