Sheung Wan (2020)

The artwork reflects the artist’s underlying attachment to Hong Kong signboards based on one of his multi-identities as a Hong Kong signboard heritage conservation group’s co-founder.

A large amount of the beautiful signs had disappeared in the past 10 years due to the change of regulation & decay of traditional shops and trades – however, the love towards these authentic crafts & strong expression of vibrant street life in the city has yet to cease.

The photograph captured a scene that is now rare to be found in Hong Kong - a street in Sheung Wan area which is still full of signboards that are mainly built by long-established dried goods’ stores. One can tell how a street is full of competition and energy when signs are often positioned strategically for maximum exposure - just like this street in the photo. The signs seem to be reaching out to the man on the bike, waiting for the goods to be delivered from him.

An award-winning Hong Kong photographer and architect, Kevin Mak captures Hong Kong from unique urban and spatial perspectives. His art embraces the layers of history and blending of cultures that Hong Kong represents, capturing this in a timeless yet modern style. Through his striking images, Kevin aims to showcase the quiet calm that lies under the city’s chaotic, crowded veneer.
