Kevin Mak

Hong Kong (2020)

The artwork reflects the artist’s underlying attachment to Hong Kong signboards based on one of his multi-identities as a Hong Kong signboard heritage conservation group’s co-founder.

A large amount of the beautiful signs had disappeared in the past 10 years due to the change of regulation & decay of traditional shops and trades – however, the love towards these authentic crafts & strong expression of vibrant street life in the city has yet to cease.

The neon pawn shop sign in this photograph is found as a street element that seems to have entered an interior space. The sign on the wall reads ‘New World… Import and Export’, which can also be read as ‘Door to a new world’. The photograph has embedded a wish of the artist to welcome neon, as one of the authentic sign-making crafts and visual cultures, to be back to the streets of Hong Kong.

An award-winning Hong Kong photographer and architect, Kevin Mak captures Hong Kong from unique urban and spatial perspectives. His art embraces the layers of history and blending of cultures that Hong Kong represents, capturing this in a timeless yet modern style. Through his striking images, Kevin aims to showcase the quiet calm that lies under the city’s chaotic, crowded veneer.
